A PA system (also known as a public address or power amplifier, or PA system for short) is a PA system that is used to play language or music to an audience. It is used wherever it is necessary to sonicate large areas as evenly as possible. The PA system is a sub-area of event technology, thus stage technology and sound technology.
Since loudspeakers have different radiation characteristics depending on the frequency to be transmitted and sound is broken differently depending on the frequency, PA systems are often divided into bass speakers and mid/high-frequency speakers. In addition, it is usually possible to add subwoofers.
Small PA systems, which are used for birthdays, weddings, lectures, bands and other musical purposes, are usually assembled from one to two subwoofers and two to four mid-high-frequency speakers. Large PA systems used in concerts, theatre performances or discos and tent events are usually composed of at least four subwoofers and six mid-high-frequency loudspeakers. The number of loudspeakers is basically open, so that 40 or more loudspeakers are often used at large concerts. On stages, the loudspeakers are often connected to towers and hung with flying harnesses on trusses ("flying").
For larger events, you often use six 18" woofers (each with 1 kW) in the bass area, as well as two double 21" woofers, which provide the deep bass. In the meantime, however, it has become established to use so-called line arrays at large events, as these systems can usually achieve better results due to the performance differences in ball and cylinder shafts. The two loudspeaker arrangements on the stage sides are used as left and right PA-wing. wings).
Amplifiers from PA systems can usually have a power of several kilowatts and have special reliability requirements. As a rule, several power amplifiers with high power are used, which usually control the individual channels (mostly right/left, but also additional channels, for example a delayline) and frequency ranges (low/medium/high range) separately. In the case of active boxes, the amplifiers are installed directly in the loudspeaker boxes.
